EMMTEC brings new interface between business and academia

"It's principally a place where university people can meet business people to the benefit of everyone." Gary Cook, Director of Commercial Partnerships, Lincoln University.

A mutually productive relationship

Lincoln University is one of the fastest growing centres of higher education in the UK. As such, space is at a premium, and with teaching always having to take priority, it was struggling to find any dedicated facilities for business to come in and share academic expertise.

That's when the idea of the new EMMTEC – or East Midlands Media and Technology Enterprise Centre – was born. It’s a purpose-built centre designed to foster greater collaboration between industry and the academic world.

An innovative way to run things

Increased collaboration between business and academia is well known to have highly positive benefits not just in local economies but to national and even international markets. The equation is simple: increased knowledge equals prosperous companies which equals better employment levels.

But the centre’s labs and workshops also offer direct benefits to postgraduate students – providing opportunities for collaborative research in the fields of media production and technology, principally computing.

Swelling the university’s coffers

The university is also using EMMTEC as a conference centre. In just its first three months since opening more than 2,000 individuals used its facilities for conferences. With 1,100 bed spaces around the city-centre campus, plus local hotels, it’s the perfect venue.

Looking ahead with confidence

With EMMTEC now up and running, its contribution to university life is set to be huge. Whether it is for conferences, meetings, training projects or collaborative research, the centre will raise the university's profile, generate more income, and have a hugely beneficial effect on every single student.
