World Anti-Doping Agency Social Science Research Grant Program

Description

Support for research in the social sciences to obtain information that will enable more efficient doping prevention strategies within the field of sports.

Status: Closed
Last Updated: 23/07/2012
Last Significant Update: 24/03/2010

Value Notes

Grants are assessed and determined on an application by application basis. The average budget of previously funded projects is the following:

  • One year projects: $18,400
  • Two year projects: $30,463
  • Three year projects: $66,482

Extended Description

The World Anti-Doping Agency promote, co-ordinate and monitor on an international basis the fight against doping in sport in all its forms. The Social Sciences Research Grant Program encourages scientific investigation in the social sciences to obtain information that will update and increase the effectiveness of doping prevention strategies.

Categories for the 2012 Program:

For the 2012 Program, WADA’s Education Committee has identified the following three research categories:

  1. Increasing knowledge of causes of doping behavior and influences that effect such behavior.
  2. Evaluating anti-doping intervention.
  3. Improving social science research on doping prevention (eg design and validation of measurement tools, behavioral models, specific cultural or regional perspectives)

WADA may award a research grant to organisations of any type, such as universities, colleges, small businesses, for-profit or not-for-profit groups and so on. However it is the Principal Investigator who will be responsible for writing the grant application and will be responsible for conducting the research and compiling reports.

Key Criteria

Eligible applicants can include organisations of all types (universities, businesses, not for profit organisations etc.).

Eligible projects should be one-off in nature (ie not ongoing) and may last for up to three years.

Types of projects admissible:

  • Grant support is generally for new projects or for subsequent phases of previously funded projects.
  • Grant support may also be available for an existing project already funded by WADA if additional investigating of a specific question, not foreseen in the original project, could not be financed with the project's current resources.
  • Exploratory research is admissible for starter grants, the results of which could provide the basis for investigators to then seek larger grants from other established research funding sources.

Eligible Expenditure

Applicants may request funds for direct costs only, reflecting the actual needs of the proposed project.

For 2013, the following three research categories have been identified:

  1. Increasing knowledge of causes of doping behavior or attitudes about doping and the factors that influence these behaviors or attitudes.
  2. Developing and evaluating anti-doping intervention.
  3. Improving social science research on doping prevention (design and validation of measurement tools, testing behavioral models, specific cultural or regional perspectives, cross cultural comparisons).

Restrictions

  • Projects already receiving funds from any other research grant program may not submit expenses already submitted under such other programs.
  • Unsuccessful grant applications may be revised and resubmitted up to two years in a row, provided that it still fits within the research priorities identified in the relevant subsequent calls for proposals.

Payment Procedure

  • Grant payments to successful applicants require them to enter into a contractual agreement with WADA and the signatory must be an authorised person of the Principal Investigator's institution of affiliation.
  • Once the contract is signed by all required parties 80% of the funds for the project or, as applicable for the first year of the project, will be paid to the institution of affiliation based on the information provided in the application form.
  • To receive subsequent grant amounts the applicant will be required to compile and submit a report that includes a financial report.

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit the following information with their application:

  • Project title.
  • Duration of project.
  • Amount requested from WADA for each year.
  • A detailed project summary.
  • Contact information.
  • Administrative contact.
  • Details of all other investigators involved in the project.

Application forms must be completed in full and received at WADA headquarters in Montreal before or on the day of the deadline as specified in the call for proposals.
